Individual Therapy

I offer 1 to 1 therapy for adults including adults with mild to moderate learning disabilities and/or autism.  Each session is 50 minutes in length.  Appointments are usually weekly at the same time and day.  Flexibility is offered around mutual holidays and work or family commitments. 

I work with most kinds of difficulties that a person can be experiencing including anxiety, panic, obsessive thoughts & behaviour, depression, bereavement & loss, relationship issues, illness, stress, painful experiences, abuse, bullying, eating problems, autism, spirituality, sexuality, work issues and adjustment to significant life events.

You don’t have to be experiencing a mental health problem to seek out therapy, some people use it as an opportunity for self-development.  Any aspect of life experience can be explored in therapy sessions.

The First Therapy Session

The first session lasts for 50 minutes and is booked once we've talked briefly over the phone.  This is when you can ask any further questions you might have about coming for therapy with me and get a feel for working online. 

We'll explore your reasons for coming to therapy and I can answer any questions you might have about the process.  Research consistently reports that the relationship between therapist and client is the best predictor of therapy outcome irrespective of the type of therapy, so it’s important that you feel you can be comfortable working with me and that we can build a relationship using the medium of videocalls. 

There is absolutely no obligation to book any further sessions but if you wish to, we can schedule some future appointments and make a flexible plan for your therapy.  You don’t have to decide there and then either; please feel free to go away and think it over after this first 'meeting'.  Perhaps speak with other counsellors or therapists to be sure you find the right fit, we can have an honest discussion about what you feel is the best way forward for you.

Supervision

I provide existential supervision to counsellors and psychotherapists and offer concessionary rates for practitioners in training. 

In supervision I will provide you with a non-punitive, democratic space where I invite you to be as honest as possible about your work.  You will be able to play around with ideas without needing to worry about ‘getting it wrong’.  Our sessions will create a supportive environment for you to be fully yourself and in which I can really listen to what you are saying. 

As an existential supervisor I focus on the human condition from a philosophical perspective.  I view existence as relational and value a phenomenological approach to supervision.  This basically means that supervision starts from the experience of the therapeutic relationship and looks at how both the therapist and client are creating the space in which they encounter each other.  This kind of supervision will include exploration of the following:

• Not only the content of sessions but also the relationship between you and your client

• Ethical dilemmas and space to recognise your strengths and weaknesses

• Awareness of how your assumptions and values might be restraining the work

• Looking at your work from different angles and getting a new perspective on it

• Your experience of being a therapist

• Our relationship as supervisor and supervisee
